Pre-K: We moved to the song "So Early in the Morning". We practiced playing the egg shakers and Pre-K 4 learned how to play the maracas! We also read the story "Zin, Zin, Zin a Violin" and learned about the different instruments in the orchestra.
Kindergarten: We are working on steady beat! We listened to a Spanish song called "Pin Pon" about a paper doll. We showed the steady beat sitting down, standing in place, and moving around the room. We also practiced our music for school mass! 1st Grade: We learned to sing and act out the song "Willum" and thought about how our voices moved upward and downward as we sang the melody. We practiced moving to the steady beat with the song "The Ants Go Marching". We also practiced our music for school mass! 2nd Grade: We focused on steady beat by patting and singing the song "Check it Out!". We figured out the high and low note pattern in the song "Engine, Engine" and found out that the notes were so and mi, which we learned about last year! We reviewed how to read so and mi notes on the musical staff. We earned our white belt in the sofa dojo completing our first so-mi pattern. We also practiced our music for school mass! 3rd Grade: We reviewed steady beat by performing our hand clapping pattern to the song "Billy" with partners. We listened for the melodic movement in "Chan Mali Chan" a song from Singapore. We learned to sing the refrain and showed how the melody moved downward while clapping the rhythm of the words. We also learned the dance for "Chan Mali Chan". We practiced our music for school mass! 4th Grade: We discussed the three types of steady beat patterns: 2, 3, and 4. We listened to and figured out the steady beat pattern for the song "My Town, My World". In ELA one of our words in metronome, which is a device used my musicians to keep the steady beat while practicing. We learned how they work and watched a performance of a composition written to turn metronomes into the musical instrument themselves. We practiced our music for school mass! 5th: We reviewed rhythm and notes and rests. We went over 8 rhythms we clapped in the song "Just Give Me the Beat". We assessed our skills completing the "Rhythm 4 You" assignment. We practiced our music for school mass! 6th: We learned about the famous jazz musician, Ella Fitzgerald. We discussed her use of nursery rhyme songs sung in a jazz style and how she used scat to improvise during her songs. We practiced our music for school mass! 7th: We continued to learn about blues music by comparing two different versions of the song "When the Levee Breaks", one by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie, and the other by Led Zeppelin. We are starting to understand how closely related blues style is to rock style. We practiced our music for school mass! 8th: We continued to learn about classical music and how it is a part of our everyday lives. We watched three commercials that use classical compositions and discussed how the music matched the commercial's topic. We reviewed musical elements to help us develop our ability to describe music we are listening to. We practiced our music for school mass!
