Pre-K: No class this week! Enjoy your Friday off!
K: We are working hard on steady beat! Today we learned that there are fast and slow steady beats. The speed of a song is the tempo! We practiced moving around the room to the beat beat by walking, marching, tip-toeing, stomping, and hopping. We practiced following the steady beat a different tempos. 1st: We thought about direction in music today. We understand than we can sing upward, downward, and across (stay on the same note). We used "Miss Mary Mack" and figured out that we sing upward in that song. We learned a new song in French, "Bonjour mes amis" and figured out the end of that song we sing downward. We tested our steady beat skills by circling pictures that make a steady beat and crossing out pictures that do not make a steady beat. 2nd: We continued to think about steady beat, but also started to listen for rhythm. Rhythm is the short and long sounds in a song or poem. We clapped the rhythm to "Sheep in the Meadow" and "I'm Gonna Sing!". We then figured out the rhythm to the song "Peas Porridge Hot" knowing that one sound on a steady beat is "ta" and two sounds on a steady beat is "ti-ti". We learned that when there is no sound on a steady beat it is a rest. 3rd: No class this week! Enjoy your Friday off! 4th: We finished our rhythm activity today. We practiced clapping our rhythms with our partner(s) and then practiced with instruments. We performed our rhythm on instruments for the class. 5th: We created our own steady beat pattern to use with "God Bless America" and performed them for the class. 6th: We finished up learning about Dave Brubeck, the jazz pianist and composer. We wrote interview questions for him and then used his biography to answer them. We created a picture that we thought of when we listened to his composition: Take Five, and we practiced moving to the odd steady beat in "Take Five" with bean bags. 7th: No class this week! Enjoy your Friday off! 8th: We started to discuss classical style music. We started by learning about Eric Whitacre, a current classical composer and how he put together a Virtual Choir. We evaluated the performance of one of his Virtual Choirs performing his composition "Water Night".

Here's what's happening in music this week!
Pre-K: We played "Who Stole the Cookie From the Cookie Jar"! K: We learned two songs for our next school mass: "Go Make a Difference" and "God is a Part of My Life". We worked on moving to the steady beat of a song in different ways such as stepping, clapping, patting, etc. 1st: We learned two songs for our next school mass: "Go Make a Difference" and "God is a Part of My Life". We focused on steady beat today moving to "Gilly Good Morning", "Hey Children Whose in Town?", and "Miss Mary Mack". We also figured out some non-music related activities can have a steady beat like dribbling a basket ball or sweeping the floor! 2nd: We learned "God is a Part of My Life" and reviewed "Go Make a Difference" for our next school mass. We focused on steady beat through movement. We exercised to the steady beat, showed the steady beat while sitting and then while standing. We read a poem to the steady beat "Sheep in the Meadow" and then played the activity with that poem. We then sang to the steady beat learning "I'm Gonna Sing". 3rd: We learned "God is a Part of My Life" and reviewed "Go Make a Difference" for our next school mass. We focused on steady beat and rhythm moving to the steady beat with the song "Simple Simon". We also sang and moved to the steady beat with the song "Billy". Then we learned a poem with a steady beat called "Way Down South". We also practiced clapping the rhythm of the poem and then split the class into two groups: on tapping the steady beat the other clapping the rhythm. 4th: We learned "God is a Part of My Life" and reviewed "Go Make a Difference" for our next school mass. We practiced steady beat and rhythm by clapping rhythm patterns while counting the steady beat. We broke into small groups and chose a line to write the rhythm of and practiced with our group in preparation for our performance next week. 5th: We learned "God is a Part of My Life" and reviewed "Go Make a Difference" for our next school mass. We used "God Bless America" to practice complicated steady beat patterns. We learned that "God Bless America" was written by Irving Berlin and made famous by Kate Smith in the 1930s. We watched Kate Smith's performance of the song at the hockey playoff game between the Flyers and the Bruins in 1974 and then also watched a performance by a first responder policeman from 9/11, Daniel Rodriguez, perform the song at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. 6th: We learned "God is a Part of My Life" and reviewed "Go Make a Difference" for our next school mass. We reviewed classical and blues styles before being introduced to jazz. We learned some interesting facts about jazz including that it started in the early 1900s in New Orleans. We focused on jazz composer and pianist, Dave Brubeck. His song "Take 5" uses a compound meter (meter in 2 plus meter in 3). 7th: We learned "God is a Part of My Life" and reviewed "Go Make a Difference" for our next school mass. We reviewed classical and jazz styles before being introduced to the blues. We learned some interesting facts about blues including that it was started by African American slaves and they sang about their troubles. We focused on a current blues band called Lionize. 8th: Welcome back to music! We went over rules and expectations as well as grading. We filled out a musical "All About Me" worksheet. We reviewed mass music including "Go Make a Difference". |
