Pre-K: No class this week!
K: We learned "Pass the Pumpkin" and practiced passing a pumpkin to the steady beat while we sang the song. We also passed bean bags to the steady beat of "Pass the Witch's Broomstick" and did the Halloween freeze dance! 1st: We learned to sing the song "Witch's Brew" and then created our on class witch's brew by each creating an ingredient for the brew. We also passed beans bags to the steady beat of "Pass the Witch's Broomstick". 2nd: We practiced passing a pumpkin to the steady beat of "Pass the Pumpkin". If we had the pumpkin on the word "boo!" we went back and played the instrument accompaniment rotating through bass bars, xylophone, rain stick, and gong. 3rd: We learned the song "Skin and Bones" and rotated through the instruments that accompany the song: the triangle, the tambourine, the guiro, the bass bars, and the xylophones. 4th: We learned the song "Skin and Bones" and rotated through the instruments that accompany the song: the triangle, the tambourine, the guiro, the bass bars, and the xylophones. 5th: We finished and performed our Halloween Sound Effect stories. 6th: We finished practicing and started performing our jazz songs! 7th: No class this week! 8th: No class this week!

Pre-K:
K: We reviewed how to play rhythm sticks and learned how to play two new instruments: the hand drum and the triangle! 1st: No class this week! 2nd: We created our own high and low pattern songs and played them for the class on the xylophone! 3rd: We learned the song "Great Big House" and practiced the rhythms ta quarter note, titi eighth note pair, and ta rest/quarter rest. We also figured out the melody moves downward at the end of each verse. We attempted the dance that goes with this song. Some classes could not fully cooperate and work together to make the dance a success. :( 4th: We finished our steady beat pattern review. We learned to sing the refrain to the song "Somos el barco" and figured out the melody of the Spanish part moved mostly upward and the melody of the English part moved mostly downward. We discussed melodic contour, which is the shape of a melody in a song and traced the melodic contour to the song "A la puerto del cielo". 5th: We started our Halloween stories with sound effects. We played ten different instruments and discussed with our groups which non-musical sounds were similar to each instrument. 6th: We continued to work on our jazz style nursery rhyme songs, focusing on step two, which is when we add detail or more information to the story of our song. 7th: We finished our Blues style songs and practiced singing them with our groups. We played the 12 bar blues chord progression on boomtappers to background music. 8th: We discovered that theme music used in movies comes from opera. Richard Wagner used "leitmotif" (motives, aka themes) for characters, objects, scenes, etc. in his operas. We listened to a few of his leitmotifs used in The Ring Cycle, which is a story told through four separate operas. We learned that some of the story lines in The Ring Cycle are similar to stories like Lord of the Rings, Sleeping Beauty, Thor, etc. We worked on our commercials/movie scenes in groups. Pre-K: No class this week! See you next week!
Kindergarten: We practiced the steady beat sitting in our spots and standing in our spots. We learned that we have four voices: singing, speaking, whispering, and shouting. We practiced using our four voices in a poem called "Giant's Shoes" and used our singing voice in the song "I Got Shoes". 1st: We continued working on melodic movement showing the upward and downward motion of our voices in the songs "Sleep Bonnie Bairnie" and "La ranita cri". We practiced steady beat with the game to the song "Obwisana" which is from Uganda. We had to test our balancing skills by hopping on one foot to the steady beat. 2nd: We reviewed rhythm with ta and ti-ti using "Engine, Engine" and learned about quarter rests (ta rest) using the song "I Bought Me a Cat". We had to match the sounds of each animal to the correct rhythm. We earned our next belt in the Solfa Dojo! 3rd: We reviewed the melodic movement in "Chan Mali Chan" and figured out the melodic movement in the song "String of Pearls" by Glenn Miller. We learned about Glenn Miller and how he played the trombone in jazz style. 4th: We continued to think and understand steady beat patterns and showed the steady beat pattern of 4/4 in the song "Hush Little Baby". Even though we know this song in its nursery rhyme form, we learned that a singer, Bobby McFerrin, and a cellist, Yo-Yo Ma arranged this song to be a duet. 5th: We reviewed the pentatonic scale with the spiritual "In That Great Git'n Up Mornin'". We learned that African American slaves sang spirituals to communicate in code with each other to help each other know when it was safe to escape through the underground railroad to the north. We discussed the form of the song being call and response and practiced the pentatonic scale patterns in the song. 6th: We practiced scatting, which is vocal improvisation in jazz music. We started working with our groups on our jazz style song inspired by Ella Fitzgerald. 7th: We continued to think about the slight difference between blues and other styles of music such as jazz, rock, and heavy metal. We started working with our groups on our blues style song. 8th: We learned the importance of classical style music in movies. We listened to some theme music from movies about superheros. We talked about the famous classical composer John Williams and all the movies he composed music for such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. We watched a scene from one of his movies, E.T., without his music to understand how much of an impact music has on scenes without speaking. Pre-K: We moved to the song "So Early in the Morning". We practiced playing the egg shakers and Pre-K 4 learned how to play the maracas! We also read the story "Zin, Zin, Zin a Violin" and learned about the different instruments in the orchestra.
Kindergarten: We are working on steady beat! We listened to a Spanish song called "Pin Pon" about a paper doll. We showed the steady beat sitting down, standing in place, and moving around the room. We also practiced our music for school mass! 1st Grade: We learned to sing and act out the song "Willum" and thought about how our voices moved upward and downward as we sang the melody. We practiced moving to the steady beat with the song "The Ants Go Marching". We also practiced our music for school mass! 2nd Grade: We focused on steady beat by patting and singing the song "Check it Out!". We figured out the high and low note pattern in the song "Engine, Engine" and found out that the notes were so and mi, which we learned about last year! We reviewed how to read so and mi notes on the musical staff. We earned our white belt in the sofa dojo completing our first so-mi pattern. We also practiced our music for school mass! 3rd Grade: We reviewed steady beat by performing our hand clapping pattern to the song "Billy" with partners. We listened for the melodic movement in "Chan Mali Chan" a song from Singapore. We learned to sing the refrain and showed how the melody moved downward while clapping the rhythm of the words. We also learned the dance for "Chan Mali Chan". We practiced our music for school mass! 4th Grade: We discussed the three types of steady beat patterns: 2, 3, and 4. We listened to and figured out the steady beat pattern for the song "My Town, My World". In ELA one of our words in metronome, which is a device used my musicians to keep the steady beat while practicing. We learned how they work and watched a performance of a composition written to turn metronomes into the musical instrument themselves. We practiced our music for school mass! 5th: We reviewed rhythm and notes and rests. We went over 8 rhythms we clapped in the song "Just Give Me the Beat". We assessed our skills completing the "Rhythm 4 You" assignment. We practiced our music for school mass! 6th: We learned about the famous jazz musician, Ella Fitzgerald. We discussed her use of nursery rhyme songs sung in a jazz style and how she used scat to improvise during her songs. We practiced our music for school mass! 7th: We continued to learn about blues music by comparing two different versions of the song "When the Levee Breaks", one by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie, and the other by Led Zeppelin. We are starting to understand how closely related blues style is to rock style. We practiced our music for school mass! 8th: We continued to learn about classical music and how it is a part of our everyday lives. We watched three commercials that use classical compositions and discussed how the music matched the commercial's topic. We reviewed musical elements to help us develop our ability to describe music we are listening to. We practiced our music for school mass! |
