Pre-K:
K: We reviewed how to play rhythm sticks and learned how to play two new instruments: the hand drum and the triangle! 1st: No class this week! 2nd: We created our own high and low pattern songs and played them for the class on the xylophone! 3rd: We learned the song "Great Big House" and practiced the rhythms ta quarter note, titi eighth note pair, and ta rest/quarter rest. We also figured out the melody moves downward at the end of each verse. We attempted the dance that goes with this song. Some classes could not fully cooperate and work together to make the dance a success. :( 4th: We finished our steady beat pattern review. We learned to sing the refrain to the song "Somos el barco" and figured out the melody of the Spanish part moved mostly upward and the melody of the English part moved mostly downward. We discussed melodic contour, which is the shape of a melody in a song and traced the melodic contour to the song "A la puerto del cielo". 5th: We started our Halloween stories with sound effects. We played ten different instruments and discussed with our groups which non-musical sounds were similar to each instrument. 6th: We continued to work on our jazz style nursery rhyme songs, focusing on step two, which is when we add detail or more information to the story of our song. 7th: We finished our Blues style songs and practiced singing them with our groups. We played the 12 bar blues chord progression on boomtappers to background music. 8th: We discovered that theme music used in movies comes from opera. Richard Wagner used "leitmotif" (motives, aka themes) for characters, objects, scenes, etc. in his operas. We listened to a few of his leitmotifs used in The Ring Cycle, which is a story told through four separate operas. We learned that some of the story lines in The Ring Cycle are similar to stories like Lord of the Rings, Sleeping Beauty, Thor, etc. We worked on our commercials/movie scenes in groups.
